Abstract

706,608. Mixing appliances. DOW CHEMICAL CO. July 23, 1952 [July 26, 1951], No. 18683/52. Class 86 [Also in Group V] A machine for mixing, devolatilizing and extruding organic thermoplastic comprises a barrel containing a single elongated rotor which consists of a helically grooved mixing section interposed between and continuous with compressive feed and discharge screw sections, the barrel having a devolatilization port adjacent the mixing section of the rotor. The rotor 11, Fig. 2, comprising feed screw, mixing and discharge screw sections 21, 22 and 23 respectively, operates with a working clearance in a barrel 20, Fig. 3, which is surrounded by a heating jacket 19. The mixing section 22 which is formed with smoothly rounded helical grooves 28 of the same hand as the screws of the feed and discharge sections, has a neck 29 which forms a supplemental mixing zone and is joined to the feed screw section 21 by a tapered portion 26. The devolatilization port 17 is rectangular and it extends through a peripheral span of 45 degrees to 70 degrees on the surface of the rotor and has a length which is slightly less than that part of the mixing section 22 extending on the discharge side of the neck 29. The devolatilization port may be open to the atmosphere or may be connected with a vacuum pump to assist in removal of volatile matter. At its discharge end the rotor 11 may be provided with a helically grooved torpedo-shaped element 24 which mixes the thermoplastic and prevents surges and pulsations in the delivery rate of the machine. The torpedo-shaped element 24 has several necks 35 and joins the discharge screw section 23 at a tapered portion 30.
