Abstract

709,264. Electron beam apparatus. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. Oct. 31, 1949 [Oct. 29, 1948], No. 27867/49. Class 39(1) An electric discharge device comprises an envelope 13 containing a cylindrical cathode K, a plurality of control electrodes S1, &c., of gutter form disposed within an annulus coaxial with said cathode with their bottom parts directed towards the cathode and with the side faces of adjacent control electrodes approximately parallel, and a plurality of receiving electrodes 1, 2, 3, &c., alternating with the control electrodes, means outside the envelope for producing a magnetic field parallel to the axis of the cathode, means for applying a positive voltage to the conrol elecrodes and means for selectively reducing the positive voltage on any of the control electrodes in order to direct the electron stream R from the cathode to one of the receiving electrodes. A cylindrical grid G is provided for control of the cathode current and may be in one piece or may may be divided into sections equal to the number of control electrodes SI, &c. Different sections of the grid may be arranged substantially radially from the cathode K as at G8. The electrodes S3, &c., are connected by switches K3, &c., to the negative pole of the battery Ea and are directly, or over resistances R3, &c., connected to the positive pole of the battery Ea. The members R1, &c., may be impedances other than purely ohmic. The cathode K is connected to the negative pole of the battery Ea. The receiving electrodes 1, &c., are connected by resistances rl, &c., to a potential which may be the cathode potential. By a suitable choice of the voltage E5 and the impedances contained in the circuits the electron beam R may be directed to one of the electrodes S1, &c., or to an adjacent receiving electrode 1, &c., by closing the contact of the corresponding control electrode S1, &c., in a manner similar to that of the trochotron. A self-stepping cathode beam may be obtained by a suitable arrangement of the resistances R1, &c., and r1, &c. If for example the impulse current to the control electrode S5 has been deflected towards the adjacent receiving electrode and in the resistance r5 of this electrode has given rise to a sufficiently great potential drop the beam will be forced towards the next control electrode S4 which then receives part of the electron current. This current produces in its turn a potential drop in resistance R4 such that the beam is brought over to the receiving electrode 4, and then the operation is repeated for the following electrodes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled) in which the electrodes 1, &c., are not of gutter form, in which the switches K4 and K5 are connected to the voltage Ea through impedances R14 and R15 and in which the terminals A1, &c., are connected to circuits in which the cathode current is employed. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
