Abstract

A stabilized fuel oil composition containing cracked fuel oil contains a minor proportion of the residue obtained by the distillation of an acid treated and neutralized lubricating oil fraction obtained from a naphthenic crude oil, and either an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide, or the phosphorous sulphide reaction product of the salt. The lubricating oil fraction may be treated with sulphuric acid and neutralized with aqueous caustic alkali, for example sodium hydroxide solution. The alkyl group of the salt may contain 5-22 carbon atoms and be substituted by halogen atoms or amino groups. Salts mentioned are barium and potassium iso-octylphenol sulphide and barium iso-octylphenol-sulphide reacted with phosphorous pentasulphide. Calcium petroleum sulphonate may also be added to the compositon. A heavier oil may be recovered from the distillation of the naphthenic crude oil and cracked to produce the cracked fuel oil, which may be a thermally or catalytically cracked oil. A catalytic cracking process is described using a fluidized catalyst and having reaction and regeneration zones. Catalyst referred to are the oxides of metals of Groups II, III and IV, for example silica-alumina; the catalysts may also contain ThO2, WO3, MoO3, BeO, Bi2O3, CdO, UO3, B2O3, SnO2, Fe2O3, V2O3, MnO, Cr2O3, CaO, Tl2O3, MgO or Ce2O3.
