Abstract

717,612. Heating air for diesel engines by electricity. C.A.V., Ltd. March 10, 1953, [March 12, 1952.] No. 6393/52. Class 39 (3). A device for heating induction air for I.C. engines, e.g. diesels, comprises a length of electrically conducting metal gauze a, bent in zig-zag manner and mounted in a conduit d which is secured in the induction pipe to the engine. The gauze a is supported by bars b at each bend and is mounted in insulation e. The conduit d has a pocket h into which the heater may be retracted by means of a lever pivoted at i, or by a slidable stem, Fig. 5 (not shown). In one modification the pocket h is dispensed with, and the heater is fixed in a by-pass part of the conduit d, a valve being positioned at the entrance to the other, parallel, . part of the conduit d. In further modifications, the conduit d has no pocket or by-pass, and the gauze a is secured directly in the conduit d.
