Abstract

718,864. Two-part couplings. AIRTRON, Inc. Jan. 6, 1953, [April 22, 1952.] No. 392/53. Class 38(1). A plug and socket connector comprises metal shells 12, 12x within which sub-assemblies to, iox are clamped by nuts 14, 14x respectively. The sub-assemblies include insulating bodies 20 carrying socket and pin contacts 22, 30 respectively and they are prevented from rotating within the shells by keys on the latter engaging slots in bodies 20. The outer end of shell 12 is formed as a pair of arcuate, axially-extending tongues 74, 76, the gaps 77a, 77b between these being of different widths and adapted to receive tongues 74x, 76x formed on shell 12x when the two connector parts are engaged, the different dimensions of the gaps permitting engagement of the parts in one position only. A spring ring 78 located in grooves 75 on tongues 74, 76 snaps into grooves 75x on tongues 74x, 76x and holds the two shells together. A thick disc 60 of soft dielectric material shields the socket contacts at the outer end of shell 12 and is easily pierced by the pins 30, the holes closing after withdrawal of the pins. Grommets 72, 94 at the inner ends of the shells grip the outer coverings of the cables leading to the connector.
