Abstract

A metal working lubricating composition comprises an aqueous base, a water-soluble or water-dispersible non-ionic surface-active agent of formula <FORM:0721526/III/1> , where a, b and c are integers, n is an integer greater than 2 and R is a hydrogen atom or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon or acyl group, a water-soluble nitrite, a water-soluble organic buffering agent and a water-soluble aliphatic alcohol, ether or amine. Surface-active agents specified are the reaction product of 60 per cent. polyoxypropylene glycol and 40 per cent. ethylene oxide and the monopropyl and monobutyl ethers and the monostearyl, monolauryl and monooleyl esters thereof. and the reaction product of 70 per cent. polyoxypropylene glycol and 30 per cent. ethylene oxide. Nitrites referred to are inorganic and organic nitrites such as Na, K, Li, Ca and Ba nitrites; benzyltrimethylammonium, morpholinium, dibenzylammonium, 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl-ammonium, cyclohexylammonium, betaphenylethyl - ammonium, 2,4,4,6-tetramethyltetrahydro-1,3-oxazonium, methyl isobutyl carbammonium, piperidinium, dicyclohexylammonium and diisopropylammonium nitrites. Buffering agents specified are the alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of low molecular weight aliphatic carboxylic acids, for example, acetates, citrates and tartrates. Solubilizing agents mentioned are the alkyl ethers of glycols, such as the monomethyl, monoethyl, monopropyl, mono-n-butyl, monoisobutyl and mono-tert. butyl ethers of ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monohexyl-butyl ether, propylene glycol mono-isoamyl ether, the monomethyl, monoethyl, mono-n-propyl, monoisopropyl, monobutyl and monodecyl ethers of diethylene glycol, the monoethyl, mono-isopropyl and mono-isoamyl ethers of dipropylene glycol, diisobutylene glycol mono-isopropyl ether, ethylene-propylene glycol monoethyl ether and ethylene-isobutylene glycol mono-isopropyl ether; glycerol, hexylene glycol, decylene glycols, cetylene glycols, dipropylene glycol, dibutylene glycol and diamylene glycol; and ethylamine, mono,- di-, and tri-ethanolamines, dimethylethanolamine, diethylethanolamine and isopropanolamine. Optional ingredients specified are low molecular weight aldehydes such as acetaldehyde, oil of mirbane, "Neutroleum" and anti-foaming agents such as silicone polymers.
