729,431. Fuel injectors. HARTRIDGE, L. Sept. 25, 1952 [Sept. 25, 1951], No. 22436/51. Class 7(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for testing fuel injection nozzles and pumps comprises means associated with the valve of a nozzle fed by the injection pump for producing an electrical pulse which operates a gaseous discharge lamp for illuminating stroboscopically an indicating element attached to or associated with the pump shaft. A fuel injector 3 is provided with a rod 20 in contact with the needle valve 10, the upper tip of which rod comprises a permanent magnet co-operating with an induction coil 17 to produce an electrical pulse each time the valve 10 is raised. The pulses, after amplification by a transformer T and amplifier A, operate a neon discharge lamp N arranged to illuminate a pointer P on the driving shaft of the pump R moving over a scale S. For testing the pump one or more of the injectors 3 are connected to the pump outlets D. Each delivery operation of the pump produces a flash from the tube N which coincides with the beginning of injection and the phase of the injection relative to the top dead centre of each pump piston can be read from the apparently stationary positions of the rotating pointer P in relation to graduations on the scale S representing the top dead centre positions of the pump pistons. For testing injectors the top cap of an injector is removed and replaced by a casing 16 carrying the rod 20 and coil 17. The injector is then connected to the pump and tested as above. Shut-off valves may be provided in the pipes connecting the injectors to the pumps to determine which of a number of pump elements or injectors is faulty, or switches in the induction coil circuits may serve the same purpose. The rod 20 may be a permanent magnet or an electromagnet or the induction coil may be replaced by a crystal or carbon pile resistance subject to the vibrations of the valve 10. A rectifier W may be used to short circuit the pulses produced when the valve 10 closes.
