The elongated resistor shown in Fig. 6 comprises a central compressed powder resistance core 9 separated from surrounding metal tube 10 by insulating compressed powder filling 11. In manufacturing examples described: (i) a metal tube, Fig. 2, with temporary central rod 1 (e.g. of steel) is filled with compressed insulating powder 3 following substantially the procedure described in Specification 693,937; (ii) the rod 1 is drawn out, Fig. 3, and replaced by a carbon rod 5, Fig. 4, or, Fig. 5, by powdered carbon or metal such as iron filings 6; (iii) the tube 10 is drawn through reducing dies to crush and/or compress the carbon rod or powdered resistance material and thus produce Fig. 6. The powdered resistance material may consist of carbon mixed with alumina or silica.
