Abstract
In making thin glass coatings on wires, foils or the like, at least one of the component materials of the glass is applied to the metal by evaporation in a high vacuum. The coating, which may be, or include, silicon, boron or phosphorus, is then converted into glass by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere. The glass, therefore, may consist of vitreous silicic or boric acids, and, if part of the metal, e.g. copper, of the wire &c. enters into chemical combination with the applied material during the heating, a coating of, e.g., copper silicate, borate or phosphate is formed.
