Abstract

The invention comprises substances stated to be dyes for animal fibres, e.g. hair (see Group IV (c)) of the formula: (NO2)mR(NHR1)n(NR2R3)p where R is an aromatic radical, R1, R2 and R3 are aliphatic radicals containing at least one hydroxy group, and m, n and p are integers having a value of at least 1. Values specified for R1, R2 and R3 are -CH2CH2OH, -CH2.CH2.CH2OH, -CH2CHOH.CH3, -CH2. CHOH.CH2OH, and -CH2.CH2.CH2.CH2OH, and the radicals of polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol. In examples: (1) 1(b -ethylolamino) - 4 - amino - 3 - nitrobenzene (prepared from 1,4-diamino-3-nitrobenzene and ethylene chlorhydrin) is reacted with ethylene chlorhydrin to give 1-(di-b -ethylolamino)-4-(b -ethylolamino)-3-nitrobenzene, and (2) 1,4-diamino-3-nitrobenzene is reacted with (a) 3 mols. glycidol, (b) 1 mol. ethylene chlorhydrin and 2 mols. glycidol, or (3) 3 mols. 3-chloropropanol-1.ALSO:The invention comprises dyes for animal fibres of the formula:-<FORM:0741334/IV(c)/1> where R is an aromatic radical, R1, R2 and R3 are aliphatic radicals containing at least one hydroxy group, and m, n and p are integers having a value of at least 1. Value specified for R1, R2, and R3 are CH2, CH2, OH, -CH2, CH2, CH2, OH, -CH2, CH OH, CH3, -CH2, CH OH, CH2 OH and -CH2, CH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 OH, and the radicals of polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol. The products dye animal fibres, in particular human hair, and may be used together with other nitro dyes, such as those of Specification 707,618. In examples, (1) 1(b -ethylolamino)-4amino-3-nitrobenzene (prepared from 1.4-diamino-3-nitrobenzene and ethylene chlorhydrin) is reacted with ethylene chlorhydrin to give 1-(di-b -ethylolamino)-4-(b -ethylolamino)-3-nitrobenzene, which may be used in aqueous solution with ammonia, alcohol, and a fatty alcohol sulphonate to dye hair and to dye human hair when mixed with 1.2-diamino-4-nitrobenzene; (2) 1.4-diamino-3-nitro benzene is reacted with (a) 3 mols. glycidol, (b) 1 mol. ethylene chlorhydrin and 2 mols. glycidol; or (3) 3 mols. 3-chloropropanol-1, and the products are each used with 5-nitro-2.4-diamino-toluene, ammonia, and a wetting agent in aqueous solution to dye white hair.
