Abstract

A concentrated germicidal composition suitable for dilution comprises an aqueous solution under acidic conditions, preferably with a pH less than 6, of one or more germicidal phenols normally sparingly soluble in water, containing more than 1 per cent e.g. 1 1/2 to 5 per cent by weight of the phenol, maintained in solution by sufficient e.g. 10 to 25 per cent by weight of a solution of an anionic or non-ionic dispersing agent or mixture thereof which may also have a detergent action and preferably also by the presence of an organic liquid e.g. ethyl alcohol, methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol to increase the dispersing power of the dispersing agents. The composition is acidified with inorganic acids e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric or with organic acids e.g. acetic, propionic, lactic, malic, tartaric, citric. Essential oils e.g. terpinolene, terpineol, citronella or pine oil or a mixture of such oils may also be added. Specified germicidal phenols are p-chloro-m-cresol, p-chloro-m-xylenol, o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol, the benzyl cresols, amyl-m-cresol, 2 : 4-dichloro-3 : 5-dimethyl phenol,2 : 21-dihydroxy-3 : 5 : 31 : 51- tetrachlorodithenylmethane and 2 : 21- dihydroxy - 3 : 5 : 6 : 31 : 51 : 61 - hexachloro-diphenylmethane. Specified anionic dispersing agents are alkyl-aryl sulphonate e.g. a sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, the salts of primary and secondary long-chain alkyl hydrogen sulphonates and the sulphosuccinates (e.g. a sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate). Specified non-ionic dispersing agents are a condensation products of ethylene oxide with long-chain fatty alcohols, octylphenols and with dodecylmercaptans and a polyethylene glycol fatty acid ester. When alkyl aryl sulphonate or sulphosuccinate dispersing agents are used solubilising agents such as urea and dicyandiamide are also used to increase the solubility of the former.
