Abstract

Lubricating greases are prepared by saponifying in a lubricating oil, with an excess of alkali, either glycerde fats and oils derived from C12-C30 hydroxy fatty acids, or mixtures containing these acids, and glycerine, heating the reaction mixture until gas evolution ceases, and cooling. Oils and acids specified are castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, hydroxy stearic acids and their esters, hydrogenated fish oils, and ricinoleic acid. These may be mixed with non-hydroxy fatty acids and glycerides such as rapeseed oil. The alkali may be caustic soda. Any excess alkali remaining after the grease has been cooled may be neutralized by adding a fat or fatty acid. Lubricating oils referred to are mineral and synthetic oils, e.g. esters. Optional ingredients referred to are oilsoluble petroleum sulphonates, for example sodium petroleum sulphonate, amines, e.g. phenyl-naphthylamine, condensation products of propylene diamine and salicylaldehyde, and extreme pressure agents containing sulphur.
