Abstract
751,661. Cupola furnaces. HENRIKSON, M. G. May 17, 1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 14376/54. Class 51(2). The combination of a pair of cupola furnaces and a preheating system for the air blast therefor, comprises a heat exchanger 1 having a combustion chamber 2 fired by a mixture of exhaust gases extracted from upper and lower levels of the cupolas and passed in turn through a mixer valve 5, which may be automatically controlled in accordance with the air blast temperature, and through a cyclone separator 6. Each cupola is formed with off-takes 13 for gases low in carbon monoxide disposed just above the melting zone and connected by valve controlled ducts 8 to the mixer valve 5 with inlets 14 for steam just above the said off-takes 13, and with off-takes 11 for gases rich in carbon monoxide disposed near the top of the charge and connected by valve controlled ducts 7 to the mixer valve 5. The combustion chamber 2 is provided with an inlet 3 for combustion air and with an igniting burner 4. Hot blast from the heat exchanger is distributed by ducts 10 to tuyeres 15 in the cupolas.
