Abstract

Materials are bonded with an unsaturated linear polyester modified with more di-isocyanate than is capable of reacting with the end groups, the bonding process being effected at elevated temperature in the absence of cross-linking agents whereby the polyester is set by polymerization at the double bonds. Bonding may be effected in presence of a tertiary base or an ester thereof. Preferably the di-isocyanate modified polyester has a molecular weight of 250-1000. In examples (1) an ethylene glycolmaleic anhydride-phthalic anhydride polyester (OH number 150 and acid number 3.4) is reacted with toluylene-di-isocyanate. Either the product is dissolved in ethyl acetate and used to join aluminium sheets or the product is cast into a rod (m.p. 50-60 DEG C.) with which the preheated material to be bonded is brushed thereby giving a liquid film which sets. (2) and (3) As in Example 1 but effecting bonding in presence of triethenolamine triacetate or methyldiethanolamine diacetate. (4) As in Example 1 but using an ethylene glycol-maleic anhydridephthalic anhydride polyester (OH number 155 and acid number 4). Specifications 692,045 and 700,617 are referred to.
