Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the continuous manufacture of bromochloromethanes by passing bromine and methyl chloride with, if desired, some of the products of reaction, over a finely-divided contact agent maintained in turbulent condition, at a temperature between 250 DEG C. and the decomposition temperature of the products for 1-66 secs. reaction time, recovering the desired products and recycling the residue. The proportions of reactants are in the ratio of from 1:0.5 to 1:5 of organics to bromine, and the contact material may be sand of particle size 50-150 mesh B.S.S. In examples the method is used to give a product containing a high proportion of monobromomonochloromethane, and some dibromomonochloromethane, sand being used as contact agent, and unreacted reagents being removed from exit gases for re-cycling. To get a high proportion of dibromochloromethane all or any of the reaction products may be recycled.
