Abstract

Chloroalkane sulphonates are obtained by the action of alkylene chlorobromides on water-soluble sulphites, which may be generated in situ from metabisulphites and metal hydroxide. In examples, ethylene chlorobromide reacts with sodium or potassium sulphite in presence of alcohol, to give the b -chloro-ethane sulphonates; 1 - bromo - 3 - chloro - propane reacts with sodium sulphite to give sodium 3-chloropropane sulphonate. Other haloalkanes specified are 1 : 2-propylene chlorobromide, butylene and amylene chlorobromides.
