Abstract

761,587. Hay-making machines. FAIRWEATHER, K. M. and BLACK, A. Sept. 9, 1954 [March 9, 1954], No. 6891/54. Class 6(3). A hay-making machine for lifting and aerating crops comprises a rotatable drum 10 provided with tines 12 pivotally mounted on a stationary spindle 13 disposed eccentrically to the axis of rotation of the drum, the tines projecting through openings 10a in the drum to pick up material and retracting inwardly as the drum rotates. A spring loaded roller 14 is provided to crush the crop before it is returned to the ground. The drum 10 and roller 14 are mounted in a wheeled frame 1 1a and driven from a tractor power shaft by means of a universal joint 21, gearbox 22 and chain and sprocket gearing 25. As shown in Fig. 3, the spindle 13 is provided with stub axles 13a and the drum 10 is formed with end sleeves 10a which are rotatable on the axles 13a. An adjustable turning plate 28 may be fixed at one end of the axle 13a to adjust the position of the spindle 13.
