761,788. Adhesive-coated films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. Jan. 6, 1955 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 785/54. Addition to 723,631, [Group IV (a)]. Class 140. A pressure-sensitive adhesive self-sealing sheet or tape consists of a film of solid polyethylene plastic claimed in the parent Specification as backing, coated with a pressuresensitive adhesive applied only to that surface of the film backing which has been treated by direct irradiation with ultra-violet light emitted by an artificial source of sufficient intensity and for a sufficient time to improve the bonding properties of the film surface for the adhesive. The film may be directly irradiated on one side and adhesive-coated only on that side, or may be irradiated on both sides and adhesivecoated on one or both sides. In the latter case, when coated on one side only, the uncoated side may be dusted with powdered talc before rolling, or sheet material, which will easily release from the adhesive, e.g. Holland cloth, may be interleaved during rolling. The adhesive may be rubber or polyisobutylene with colophony, hydrogenated rosin, or soft alkyd resin, applied in solution or by calender, and dried at 50-70‹ C. The coated sheet may be slit into tapes or rolled and the roll cut into sections.
