Abstract
Sulphates, present in lime or lime sludge which is burnt, are reduced by an agent introduced into the lime after they have been at least partly calcined but while they are still being burnt. The size of the reducing agent particles must be such that they are not small enough to be burnt in the flame, or too coarse e.g. above 2 mms., that incomplete reaction with the sulphates results. Agents specified are, coke coal, oil and gas, and they may be admitted with the fuel.ALSO:Sulphates, present in materials containing also calcium carbonate which are burnt for making cement, are reduced by an agent introduced into the materials after they have been at least partly calcined but while they are still being burnt. Reducing agents e.g. coke, coal, oil or gas, may be blown through the discharge end of the kiln, and must be large enough to contact the materials and not be burnt in the flame, but they should not be so coarse that they do not react completely with all the sulphate present, e.g. not greater than 2 mms. size. They may be admitted with the fuel.
