Abstract

777,748. Moulding linoleum-type sheet material. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Jan. 6, 1955 [June 3, 1954], No. 398/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] Linoleum composition, rubber or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate is formed into sheet material for floor or wall coverings by feeding the material to a calender 9 at such a rate that the material does not bank up, thus preventing the material from excessive mixing which allows the finished sheet to retain the individual colours of the starting material. As shown, material is calendered at 2 into a sheet 3 which is cut into strips 4. The strips are turned through 90 degrees and calendered at 5 to form a sheet 6 which is cut into blocks 8 by a roller 7. The blocks are fed to the calender 9 to form the finished sheet. The calenders 5 and 9 may be driven at the same speed, the quantity of material fed to the calender 9 being adjusted by adjusting the pass between the rollers of the calender 5. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sheet formed by the calender 9 is cut into strips, rotated through 90 degrees, and the strips calendered to form a finished sheet.
