Apparatus for grinding a radius on a workpiece, such as a milling cutter 7, comprises a rotary grinding element 14 mounted on a swivelling element 23. The workpiece 7 is carried by a bracket 6 arranged to be clamped by a device 8 and to swivel about a device 4 for clamping an arm 3 pivotally mounted at 2 to a base 1. The workpiece is held stationary during the grinding operation either by clamping it or by pressing one of the teeth against a pivotallymounted indexing finger 12 with the aid of a knurled disc 11. A compressed-air or electric motor 16 rotates the grinding element 14 which is carried by a stand comprising two parts 17, 18 adjustably connected by an arcuate guideway 19 to allow the inclination of the axis of the grinding element and hence the clearance angle of the cutter teeth to be varied. The stand may be adjusted by a screw 39 against the action of a spring 38 in a guideway 22 forming part of the swivelling element 23. Two stops 41, 42 adjustable in a circular guide 43 in the base 1 limit the arcuate movement of the element 23. To set up the apparatus to obtain the required radius, the finger 12 is removed from a bore 26 concentric with the pivot pin 24 of the element 23 and is replaced by a template having a right-angled notch 30. The template is displaced from the axis 25 by a screw 32 until a pointer 33 co-operating with a scale 34 shows that the corner of the notch is at the required radius from the axis 25 whereupon the workpiece is adjusted until its edges engage the sides of the notch in the template. After the finger 12 has been replaced, the screw 39 is adjusted until the grinding element 14 comes into contact with the workpiece when the swivelling element 23 may be oscillated between the stops 41, 42 to produce the desired radius.
