Abstract
A cotton strand is impregnated with a homopolymer or copolymer of methacrylic acid ester of the general formula <FORM:0783116/IV (b)/1> in which, in the case of a homopolymer, R is an alkyl radical having 3-6 carbon atoms and, in the case of a copolymer, R is two or more different alkyl radicals neither or none of which has more than 12 carbon atoms and the average number of carbon atoms in the R groups of the copolymer is in the range of 3-6. The polymer may be of a methacrylic acid ester or esters, e.g. normal butyl methacrylate and normal hexyl methacrylate copolymer and may be applied in organic solution. After removing the solvent, the strand is passed through a pre-heating column and then drawn through a tunnel-shaped aperture in a heated die (see Group VIII), the diameter of the aperture not exceeding the diameter of the strand by more than two mils, and then baked. The organic solvent may be toluene, xylene, acetone, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, naphtha or mixtures thereof.ALSO:A cotton suture strand is coated and impregnated with a homopolymer or copolymer of methacrylic acid esters of the general formula <FORM:0783116/VI/1> in which, in the case of a homopolymer, R is an alkyl radical having 3-6 carbon atoms and, in the case of a copolymer, R is two or more different alkyl radicals neither or none of which has more than 12 carbon atoms and the average number of carbon atoms in the R groups in the copolymer is in the range of 3-6. A cotton suture is coated and impregnated with a solution in an organic solvent of a homopolymer or copolymer of methacrylic acid ester or esters. After removing the solvent the suture is passed through a preheating column and then is drawn through a funnel-shapped aperture in a heated die (see Group VIII), the diameter of the aperture not exceeding the diameter of the thread used by more than two mils, and then baked. The suture is impregnated and coated with 5-20 per cent by weight of polymer. Such a suture is non-capillary, does not broom when cut and has good knot holding properties. A copolymer of normal butyl methacrylate and normal hexyl methacrylate is preferred. The organic solvent used may be toluene, xylene, acetone, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, naphtha or mixtures thereof.
