Abstract

783,122. Combined telephone and dictation systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 7, 1955 [April 16, 1954], No. 10263/55. Class 40 (4). Some of the substations on a private automatic exchange are equipped with means whereby the subscriber has access to one of a group of dictating machines, can control the functions of the machine, and can call the attendant if he wishes. By dialling a single digit 9 a subscriber S1 causes a selector to seize an idle dictation trunk, say DT1, so operating line relay 302 which energizes release relay 303 to busy the trunk. Relay 303 also energizes 307 to energize the motor M of the dictating machine. When the subscriber dictates he holds down push-button PB to connect ground to the line conductors through retard coil 201. This unbalances differential clutch relay 301 which therefore pulls up to energize clutch magnet 315 to drive the recording medium. The talking path extends to trunk DT1 and over conductor pair 325 to apparatus 319. When the end of the record approaches contacts 321 close momentarily to operate buzzer 322 and return a signal to the subscriber. After releasing the push-button PB the subscriber may control the dictating-machine by dialling a digit. Relays 303, 304 hold up during the train which is repeated by line relay 302 to conductor 328. The first impulse energizes 305. At the end of the impulse 306 pulls up in series with 305, a ground pulse being applied to the upper winding of counter relay 3201 to restore it if previously energized. Relay 306 also transfers impulse conductor 328 to the lower winding of 3201 so that the remaining impulses actuate the contact sets of counter 320 successively in known manner. At the end of the digit series relay 304 falls back to restore 305, 306 and ground on conductor 329 is extended through the contacts of counter 320 to operate one of relays 308-311 depending on the digit dialled. Relay 308 operates correction magnet 314 to make a correction mark on an indicating pad. Relay 309 energizes play-back magnet 313 and clutch magnet 315. Playback is stopped either by operation of push-button PB or by the dialling of another digit. Relay 310 energizes end-ofletter magnet 312 to make an appropriate mark on the indicating pad. Relay 311 lights a lamp SL1 and sounds a buzzer to call the attendant who operates a key K1 to establish a talking connection. When the subscriber hangs up end-of-letter relay 310 energizes for a short period and the equipment is released.
