Abstract

A reactor 10, provided with interlining 14, houses a basket 36 for holding catalytic material, which is <PICT:0794915/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0794915/IV (b)/2> <PICT:0794915/IV (b)/3> made of a plurality of alloy channel sections 37 while the bottom of the basket comprises radial members 39 shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The basket is spaced to leave an annular channel between the basket and the lining. The gaseous reactants enter the reactor by inlet 23; enter the basket through slotted holes 41 and the path to the outlet 35 is of equal length from all parts of the circular peripheral edge of the catalytic basket thus providing an equal reaction time when the gaseous reactants are distributed over the circular peripheral surface of the catalyst bed. The paths of the flow of gas via 39 to 35 may also be of the same length. The reactor is particularly useful in the production of the catalytic treatment of hydrocarbons and exemplified is the catalytic hydroforming of light hydrocarbon oils, the reactant material flowing into reaction zones of temperature ranging from 700 DEG to 1075 DEG F. and pressures ranging from 25 p.s.i.g. to 1000 p.s.i.g. Thus a naphtha of gravity 52 DEG a.p.i. an octane rating of 30 c.m.r.r. together with the necessary hydrogen is heated in conventional apparatus to a temperature about 900 DEG F. and a pressure of about 500 p.s.i.g. with a weight space velocity of about 4.0 W.o/hour/.c. The catalyst bed consists of a platinum catalyst with 0.5 per cent platinum based on the total weight of the catalyst supported on alumina with 2 per cent of silica added to stabilize the alumina at elevated temperatures.ALSO:<PICT:0794915/III/1> <PICT:0794915/III/2> <PICT:0794915/III/3> A reactor 10, provided with interlining 14, houses a basket 36, for holding catalytic material, which is made of a plurality of alloy channel sections 37 while the bottom of the basket comprises radial members 39 shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
