Abstract

Sulphides of dialkyl phenols are prepared by reacting thymol, carvacrol and 3-methyl-4-t-butyl phenol with sulphur dichloride in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or ether. 1,3,5 - Xylenol, 3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - chlorophenol, 3 - methyl - 6 - t - butylphenol and 3 - dodecylcresol may be similarly reacted. The sulphides may be used as stabilizers for polyethylene.ALSO:Ethylene polymers and copolymers with not more than 15 per cent of a comonomer, e.g. vinyl chloride and acetate, vinylidene chlorofluoride and methyl methacrylate are stabilized with bis-(dialkylphenol) sulphides. Mono- or disulphides may be used, preferably having an alkyl group of five or less carbon atoms which may be a branched chain alkyl; 4,41-thiobis-(3-methyl-6-t-butylphenol) is particularly preferred but suitable compounds in which substituent groups may be methyl, isopropyl, sec.-butyl, t-butyl, t-amyl, iso-amyl, octyl, dihexyl, benzyl, phenyl and chloro groups, are listed. The stabilizer may be incorporated during cold milling, preferably as a solution in methanol, ethanol, benzene or toluene, or may be added to a hot benzene or xylene solution of polyethylene from which films may be cast or films spun. Fillers, dyes and pigments may also be added. The stabilized polyethylene is protected against oxidative cross-linking which may occur during thermal processing, and its flow properties are improved.
