Abstract

A thermoplastic composition comprises (1) 4-26 per cent by weight of a water-soluble alkyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose ether in which the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group is 1-3 and the number of carbon atoms in the hydroxyalkyl group is 2 or 3; (2) 64-91 per cent by weight of a solvent for said ether above 100 DEG C.; and (3) 4-21 per cent by weight of a solvent for said ether below 50 DEG C. Specified cellulose ethers are methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose and methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose. The specified hot solvent is propylene glycol, and the specified cold solvents are water, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate and a 50 per cent aqueous solution of gluconic acid. A one-stage process for producing methyl hydroxypropyl or methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose is described in which alkali cellulose is treated simultaneously with methyl chloride and propylene oxide or ethylene oxide. Examples are given.
