Abstract

A polyester composition comprises a linear aromatic polyester plasticised with a phthalate ester in which the alcohol residues have respectively the general formula <FORM:0805586/IV (a)/1> where R and R1 are alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl, tolyl, benzyl and tetrahydrofurfuryl radicals. The aromatic polyesters may be derived by self-condensation of hydroxy acids, e.g. p-(beta-hydroxy ethoxy)-benzoic acid, p-(hydroxy methyl)-benzoic acid, p-(beta-hydroxy ethyl)-benzoic acid, and by the condensation of dicarboxylic acids, e.g. terephthalic, isophthalic, 1,4-diphenoxy benzene-41, 411 - dicarboxylic, 1,4 - bis - (phenoxy methyl)-benzene - 41, 411 - dicarboxylic, 1,4 - bis - (phenoxy methyl)-benzene-4,41-dicarboxylic, phenoxy benzene-4,41-dicarboxylic and diphenoxy alkane dicarboxylic acids with glycols, e.g. ethylene, trimethylene, tetramethylene and hexamethylene glycols, and dihydroxy aromatic compounds, e.g. hydroquinone. Derivatives of the acids, e.g. amides, acid chlorides and esters can be used. Specified phthalate esters are methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl, glycollate, propyl phthalyl propyl glycollate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, phenyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, tolyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, xylyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, benzyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate and tetrahydrofurfuryl phthalyl ethyl glycollate. In the examples, an ethylene terephthalate-ethylene isophthalate copolymer was blended at 171 DEG C. with (1) methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate; (2) ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate; (3) butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, the products being moulded into films.
