Abstract
Polycarbonate resins are derived from dihydroxy organic compounds containing carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups, if desired in admixture with dihydroxy compounds free from such acid groups. The dihydroxy compound or mixture of compounds may be reacted with phosgene or with bis-chlorocarbonic acid esters of the dihydroxy compounds. The acidic dihydroxy compounds may be tartaric acid, dihydroxystearic acids, specified dihydroxy cyclohexane-mono- and di-carboxylic acids and dihydroxybenzene mono- and di-carboxylic acids, 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl - 2,21 - dicarboxylic acid, specified di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkanes containing carboxyl groups, 1,4-dihydroxybenzene sulphonic acid - 2, 1,6 - dihydroxynaphthalene sulphonic acid-3, 4,41-dihydroxy - diphenyl - 2,21 - disulphonic acid and 2,2 - (4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl - 3,31 - disulpho)propane. Non-acidic dihydroxy compounds which may be used in admixture with the above in forming the polycarbonates include ethylene and polyethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, xylene glycols, specified alkane diols and cyclohexane diols, 2,2-(4,41-dihydroxy-dicyclohexyl) - propane, 2,6 - dihydroxydecahydronaphthalene, hydroquinone, resorcinol, pyrocatechol, dihydroxydiphenyls, dihydroxynaphthalenes, dihydroxyanthracene, 2,21-dihydroxydinaphthyl, hydroxybenzyl alcohols, di-(monohydroxy aryl)sulphones and di-(monohydroxy aryl)alkanes (many specified). The ends of the polycarbonate chains may be terminated by the residues of phenols, aniline or methyl aniline. The polycarbonates are soluble in acetone, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, dimethyl formamide, mixtures of methanol or ethanol and benzene, and in aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. Specifications 694,681, 760,739, [both in Group XX], 772,627, 790,023, [Group XX], 808,629 and 813,000 are referred to.
