Abstract
819,868. Washing granular materials. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Sept. 18, 1956 [Sept. 24, 1955], No. 27283/55. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXXV] The operation of grading or separating plant for coal or ore is controlled by gamma rays examining the cleaned product or separated dirt to maintain constant composition of the product. Fig. 2 shows a jig washer for coal which is supplied at 3 and is stratified by the action of compressed air intermittently supplied at 6 causing pulsations in the water in the washer. A horizontal gamma-ray beam (not shown) traverses the material in a direction perpendicular to its travel and being responsive to the weight of the material may be used to control through a device 13 the removal of the lower layer of dirt to keep the coal-dirt interface at a constant height. Cleaned coal leaves at 10 and dirt falling to the bottom of the washer is extracted by conveyers and elevators 9 and 8. Systems of froth-flotation and sink-and-float cleaning where the amount of flotation reagent and the density of the separating medium are automatically controlled are described and illustrated diagrammatically.
