In conveyers for feeding containers, e.g. bottles; at high speed to a washing or filling machine, the bottles 22 are brought to the machine at relatively slow speeds by endless conveyers 20, 21, are combined into a single row and accelerated by a pair of convergent screws 49, 50 of gradually increasing pitch and fed into the machine by a screw conveyer 78. The bottles are guided into engagement with the screws by bars 40, each of which is carried by an arm 41, Fig. 10, pivoted to a rod 43. Springs 45 tend to keep the bars in correct position. If the bottles become jammed, the bars are forced inwards and a microswitch 47 is closed to shut off the driving motor of the conveyers. The bars are continued by a tapered nose 80 which leads to a pair of spring steel plates 82, 83. These plates deliver the bottles to a flexible strip 85 of plastic, preferably Teflon, which urges the bottles into contact with the screws. At the point where the bottles leave the strip, a helical groove 87 is cut in the conveyer 49 between the sides of the groove 51 and a similar groove 87<SP>1</SP> is cut in the conveyer 50. These additional grooves control the bottles adjacent the junction of the screws. The bottles are held against the screw 78 by a pivoted guide 105.
