Abstract
Cross-linked vinyl chloride polymers are obtained by first intimately incorporating in the vinyl chloride polymer a plastifying polyfunctional addition which has at least two functional groups having reactive ethylenic bonds, excepting those in which the entire functionality of the material is based solely upon two allyl groups, and then subsequently exposing the intimate admixture of the polymer and the polyfunctional addition to a field of high energy radiation, such as an electron beam, until the polymer is cross-linked by the polyfunctional addition. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or propionate, methyl or butyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride or dibutyl maleate, and the polyfunctional compound may be divinyl benzene, the divinyl ether of diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, glycerol trimethacrylate, allyl acrylate or methacrylate, diallyl maleate, fumarate, itaconate or citraconate, triallyl aconitate, cyanurate or phosphate, vinyl methacrylate or diisopropenyl diphenyl.ALSO:Cross-linked vinyl chloride polymers are obtained by first intimately incorporating in the vinyl chloride polymer a plastifying polyfunctional addition which has at least two functional groups having reactive ethylenic bonds, excepting those in which the entire functionality of the material is based solely upon two allyl groups, and then subsequently exposing the intimate admixture of the polymer and the polyfunctional addition to a field of high energy radiation, such as an electron beam, until the polymer is cross-linked by the polyfunctional addition.
