Abstract

[Also in Group XXXVI] In a transmission system in which a pilot tone is used to control the heating of thermistors in an attenuation correction network, a resistance measuring circuit including a meter is connected across the thermistor to afford permanent monitoring of the condition of the line. As shown, Fig. 1, a variable attenuation network in the transmission line TL comprises a series resistor R2 and two shunt thermistors TH1, 2 heated by rectified pilot current filtered from the transmission line by means not shown. The resistance of the thermistors is measured by a meter Ml (which may be calibrated in decibels) in series with a battery B and the thermistors, chokes L1, L2 preventing the shunting of the A.C. signals on the line. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) a meter measures the resistance of a thermistor controlled by a current derived from two pilot currents, the thermistor controlling the slope of the attenuation-frequency characteristic of a variable equalizer.
