Abstract

Brominated butyl rubber is vulcanized by heating admixtures of the rubber with an organic nitrogen-containing compound, having (1) at least two NH2 groups; or (2) having a single NH2 group; or (3) having at least one -NH- group; and at least one -NH2 group; and/or those compounds that form such groups in situ under vulcanization conditions, or mixtures thereof. The rubber, a copolymer of an iso-olefine and a conjugated multi-olefine, contains at least 0.5 weight per cent bromine but not more than three combined atoms of bromine per double bond in the polymer, and the curing may be at a temperature between 200 DEG and 450 DEG F. Lists of vulcanization agents are given and in examples, n - decylamine, hexamethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, ethylene thiourea p-amino-benzoic acid, N-methyl anthranilic acid, are used. Conventional fillers, plasticizers, pigments, anti-oxidants, may be included in the vulcanizates and the products are suitable for use in tyres, steam hose and conveyer and transmission belting.
