Abstract

840,624. Gas turbines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 2, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 3347/57. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a gas turbine engine means, operative only during starting operation of the engine, are provided for injecting a water-containing liquid coolant into the engine upstream of the turbine. The coolant is delivered from a cylinder 23 by a spring-loaded piston 24 through a non-return valve 26 to a nozzle 19, and the piston is released by a latch 35 actuated by a solenoid 38 joined to the circuit of the starting motor 13. The cylinder 23 is charged from a storage tank 20 during normal running of the engine, the pressure of air delivered by a pipeline 31 from the compressor 10 being applied to a piston 29 to reload the spring 30 and re-engage. the latch. The coolant may be water alone, water methanol mixtures, or water with a wetting-agent.
