Abstract

Coating compositions comprise an extensible binder consisting essentially of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride copolymer and a plasticiser therefore, and dispersed in the said binder 5 to 40% of its weight of a filler consisting of dyeable organic fibres not more than 3,000 microns long and having an index of refraction differing from that of the said binder by less than 0,10. Specified copolymers are those of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, acrylic esters, maleic esters, fumaric esters, and vinylidene chloride. The plasticiser may be di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, di(butoxyethyl) phthalate, methoxyethyl acetyl ricinoleate, dibutyl sebacate, di(butoxyethyl) sebacate, epoxidised soya bean oil, di(2-ethylhexyl) azelate, dioctylazelate, didecyl adipate, diisooctyl adipate, butyl isodecyl phthalate, isooctyl palmitate, octyl decyl phthalate, didecylphthalate, isooctylisodecyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, triethylene glycol dipelargonate and mixtures thereof. The filler may be alpha-cellulose fibres, wood flour, wood fibres, cotton flock, leather dust, viscose rayon and other forms of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyesters, polyesteramides and polyacrylonitrile, and may be dyed with organic dyes. The compositions may also contain thermal stabilisers, e.g. barium and cadmium salts of lauric, capric, caprylic, oleic, myristic, palmitic and stearic acids, and alkaline earth metal ricinoleates The compositions may be coated on woven, non-woven, e.g. felted, and knitted fabrics, e.g. of polyamides, polyesters, polyesteramides, viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, wool, cotton, glass and mixtures thereof, or on wood, metal or plastic sheeting, and the coating caused to adhere by heat and pressure to form leather substitutes
