Abstract
844,750. Rubber springs; friction-type damping. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 7, 1957, [March 9, 1956], No. 7395/56. Class 108(2). A damped resilient unit comprises an annular rubber cushioning element 21 located around a coiled spring 22 coaxially disposed within which is a rigid supporting member 23, the element 21 and the spring 22 being positioned between, and in contact with, abutments 26, 27, one (27) of which is movable relative to the member 23, the element 21 being free to expand radially under load, the dimensions of the unit being such that, under static load conditions, the element 21 exerts a grip on the spring 22. As shown, the member 23 is grooved at 25 to permit lubricant to flow from a reservoir 33 to the interior of the element 21. The groove may be replaced by a flat, bore, or longitudinal slit. Rebound is cushioned by a buffer 30. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown) one end of the element 21 engages the base of a cup having conically flared sides which serve progressively to engage the walls of the element 21, and thus modify the spring rate of the unit. Specification 594,908 is referred to.
