Abstract

A process for producing tertiary butyl phenylamines comprises reacting isobutylene with a phenylamine in the liquid phase at a temperature within the range of from 150 to 300 DEG C. and in the presence of an activated, substantially neutral bleaching earth of the montmorillonite type. Phenylamines specified for use as starting materials include aniline, toluidines and xylidines. Nuclearly butylated butylphenylamines are obtained in addition to N-butylated phenylamines when temperatures in the lower region of the specified range are employed and nuclearly substituted phenylamines almost exclusively with temperatures in the upper region. The catalysts specified are obtained by treating clays of the montmorillonite type with acids and washing out the reaction products. Examples are furnished.
