Abstract
Solid polymers of unsaturated hydrocarbons containing metal-containing catalyst residues are treated to remove the residues with an organoaluminium halide or a boron halide soluble in a hydrocarbon, in the presence of a hydrocarbon in the liquid phase, then with an alcohol having one to eight carbon atoms in the molecule, and the solid polymer recovered. The treatment with the alcohol may be effected either in the presence or absence of the hydrocarbon. The polymer may finally be treated with steam. The organoaluminium halide may be an aluminium dialkyl halide, an aluminium alkyl dihalide, or an aluminium alkyl sesquihalide. The boron halide may be boron trifluoride etherate. The catalyst residues are preferably those obtained by reacting a titanium compound, e.g. titanium trichloride with an organo-compound of aluminium. Specified polymers are polyethylene, and polypropylene.
