Abstract
854,047. Forcing liquids by gaseous pressure. POTOCZKY, J. B. March 10, 1959 [March 11, 1958 ; Oct. 13, 1958], No. 8295/59. Class 102(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve in a container for a fluid medium that is dispensed by gas under pressure in the container is arranged so that it can be opened only when the container is in a predetermined attitude, e.g. vertical. As shown in Fig. 2 a stem 18 in the container 14 is depressed to open the valve by pressure on a flexible diaphragm 36 transmitted through a ball 30 to a flexible partition 24 which has a socket 26 receiving the stem 18. The stem 18, which is hollow for the passage of fluid, communicates with a discharge nozzle 28 having a flexible closure flap at its outer end. Should the container be tilted the ball rolls away from the centre of a conical formation on the partition 24 so that the valve cannot be opened. The conical formation may be reversed so that the valve can be opened only when the container is inverted. In a modification the transmission of opening pressure to the valve is through liquid in a piston and cylinder device 270, 261, Fig. 6, the liquid flowing out of the cylinder should the container be tilted. In this embodiment the closure flap 290 on the nozzle is formed on an insert retained by a rib 288 fitting in a recess 282. Fig. 13 shows a further modification with liquid transmission, the cylinder 361 containing a spring-loaded piston 370 and being surrounded by an annular chamber 365 to which the liquid flows when the container is tilted. Another embodiment utilizes a pendular member 472, Fig. 15, retained in socket 471 and effecting transmission of movement to the stem 18 only when the container is vertical.
