Abstract

855,283. Abrasive tools. RONALDSON, J. V. July 8,1959 [July 16,1958], No. 22822/58. Class 60. A mounting. Figs. 1 and 2, for a rotary abrasive tool 1 of disc or wheel form comprises a central bearing 2 for supporting the abrasive disc or wheel threaded thereon and a pair of clamping plates 5, 5, also threaded on the bearing 2, bearing against the disc or wheel from opposite sides, each of the clamping plates having a marginal rib 8 at its inner side which is interrupted at intervals along its length to form radial ducts 9 and is applied flat against the disc or wheel to enclose these ducts, and the bearing 2 being channelled to allow for the supply of coolant liquid to each of the chambers 10 between the clamping plates and the disc or wheel and through the corresponding ducts and over the corresponding lateral surface of the latter to the operative periphery of the latter under the centrifugal effect of the tool rotation, whereby the liquid maintains contact with the disc or wheel surface over the whole of its travel from the bearing to the operative periphery. The bearing 2 is in the form of a hollow cylindrical thimble with a flange 6 and a threaded bore to receive a screw threaded spigot 3 on a tool bar 4 having a collar 7. The thimble has radial channels 12 leading from the hollow interior 11 to which coolant liquid is supplied by a nozzle 13. In a modification ,Fig. 3, the bearing 14 is integral with the tool bar 4 which carries a clamping nut 16.
