Abstract
857,627. Electric correspondence control systems. SOCONY MOBIL OIL CO. Inc. Jan. 8, 1959 [Jan. 8, 1958], No. 798/59. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXI] The Specification relates to offshore boreholes 13 (Fig. 1) whose characteristics are to be examined by a logging instrument 14 supported from a craft 12 floating on the surface of the water 11, and is concerned with maintaining the position of instrument 14 constant with respect to the surface of the earth 10 irrespective of variations in the level of the water due to tides, waves, &c. The instrument 14 is attached by a cable 15, supported by a sheave 16, to a drum 17 and electrical signals derived in the instrument 14 are fed along the cable 15 to slip rings 18 on drum 17 and taken by brushes 19 to a recorder 20. To sense the variations in the height of the water 11, a weight 22 is anchored in the earth 10, and attached to a suspended weight 25 by a cable 23 passing over a pulley 24, rotation of the pulley 24 due to variations in the height of the water being transmitted by a selsyn link 30, 31 and gearing 29 to a drum 28 which, via cable 27, raises and lowers the sheave 16 by corresponding amounts. In a modification (Fig. 3) the weight 22 is constituted by the conventional guide means 42 for the casing of the borehole.
