Abstract
<PICT:0860499/III/1> <PICT:0860499/III/2> Cubic boron nitride is produced by subjecting hexagonal boron nitride to an elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, lead, antimony, tin or a nitride of one of the foregoing metals. Three parts of hexagonal boron nitride are mixed with one part (by volume) of the catalyst and the mixture is pressed and heated in a carbon or tantalum tube 33 between dies 22 of an hydraulic press, with electric current flowing through conductive parts 22, 38, 32 and the tube 33. With magnesium as the catalyst the conversion is effected with temperatures of 1300 DEG to 2100 DEG C. and pressures of 69,000 to 95,000 atmospheres applied for three minutes. The conversion is also described as being effected with sodium, potassium, lithium, barium, calcium, lead, antimony, tin, magnesium nitride, lithium nitride, magnesium nitride and tin, magnesium nitride and magnesium and with magnesium nitride and sodium at similar pressures and temperatures, higher pressures being necessary for higher temperatures. Larger crystals of cubic boron nitride, including octahedral fragments 300 microns on edge, are obtained from the mixture comprising boron nitride, magnesium nitride and sodium than from other mixtures. In a further example a magnesium wire in boron nitride is used. The cubic boron nitride is very hard and may be used to tip cutting tools, Fig. 5, to which it is secured with silver/copper solder and titanium hydride, or to form the abrasive portion of p grinding-wheels or even to grind diamonds. Specifications 829,990 and 830,210 are referred to.
