Abstract
<PICT:0866085/III/1> A gaseous or vaporous hydrocarbon and steam are interacted at a temperature of 800-950 DEG C. using induction heating, heat is recovered from the resulting gaseous mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a steam boiler, and the resulting steam is used for further production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide as aforesaid. The hydrocarbon may be in the form of natural gas or gas oil. The reaction product gas may be cooled in the steam boiler from 950 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. The steam may be heated from 110 DEG C. to 400 DEG C. by further means before use in the further production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. As shown the reaction vessel comprises a cylinder 4 of heat insulation material containing an inductively heated metal tube 15, an inner tube 17 of heat insulation material and a central iron column 11 having a primary winding 12, cooling being effected by a fan 16.
