In a modification of Specification 787,829 the gases containing gaseous hydrocarbons of low molecular weight leaving the reaction chamber at a temperature of 700 C. or more are cooled to between 120‹ and 180‹ C. by injecting into them atomized water, the amount of water added being adjusted so that it is completely vaporized into the gases. The water may be injected by means of a propellant gas or vapour, e.g. the product gas or steam.
