Abstract

873,836. Cooling leads in dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1958 [Jan. 25, 1957], No. 2810/57. Class 35. In a rotor, a lead passes through a radial bore in the shaft, e.g. for connection to a slipring, the bore forming a passage for cooling medium, and at least part of the lead is bare of insulation to improve the cooling effect. As shown, the lead from the rotor windings is in the form of an insulated conducting tube 7 screwed into a semi-circular insulated copper block 8 fitted in an axial bore 30 of the shaft, a clamping bolt 16 being screwed into a wedge 14 in the end of tube 7. A similar block is provided for the other lead and these blocks form connections to slip-rings disposed outside the main casing. The axial bore also extends in the other direction to the far end of the rotor where it is fed with hydrogen from a cooler, part of this gas flowing out through tube 7 for return to the cooler and the remainder through another radial bore bringing it close to the end connections. As an alternative the gas could flow inwardly through tubes 7 and out into the air gap through a radial bore provided near the rotor centre. Specification 777,468 is referred to.
