Abstract
The invention comprises 1,8-bis-(carboxymethylthio)-p-menthane and a process for its preparation by reacting at least two equivalents of thioglycollic acid with a -pinene, limonene or terebenthine essence in the presence of an acidic addition catalyst at an elevated temperature and recovering the resulting diacid. The diacid may be separated from mono-acid and unreacted hydrocarbon by fractional extraction with alkali or by partition between aqueous methanol and cyclohexane. Examples are given where the catalyst used is cyclohexane.
