Abstract
Hexagonal crystalline molybdenum disulphide wherein 1 to 10% of the molybdenum atoms are replaced by atoms of metals having at least two valency states, is prepared by impregnating molybdenum trisulphide with an aqueous solution of a soluble compound of the metal in appropriate amount, drying the impregnated trisulphide and then reducing it to the modified disulphide at above 400 DEG C. in a mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen disulphide. The metal having at least two valency states may be iron, cobalt, nickel, copper or gallium. The modified molybdenum disulphide may be used to catalyze the hydrodesulphurization of sulphur-containing hydrocarbon fractions, e.g. naphtha, kerosene, heating oil, gas oil and lubricating oil, at 400 DEG to 1,000 DEG F., 0 to 1,000 p.s.i.g. pressure, a feed rate of 0,1 to 10 v/v/Hr, and a hydrogen rate of 100 to 10,000 cubic feet of hydrogen per barrel of feed. In examples, molybdenum trisulphide is prepared from ammonium molybdate, impregnated with cobalt acetate solution, reduced to modified molybdenum disulphides, and these are used to convert thiophene into butanes and butenes, and to hydrodesulphurize a gas oil.
