886,045. Stuffing-box substitutes. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO. Ltd. Sept. 7, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959; Feb. 9, 1960], Nos. 31121/59 and 4589/60. Class 122 (5). In a sealing device for relatively rotatable coaxial parts in which a sealing ring 1 having a front sealing face 5 to bear against a counterface on one of the parts is mounted in an annular holder 2 adapted to be secured to the other part, the ring has a portion 4 of its outer periphery extending axially from its sealing face 5 formed of polygonal shape and engaged by a correspondingly shaped portion 7 of the holder so as to prevent relative rotation whilst permitting relative axial movement therebetween. The ring 1, which may be of carbon, graphite, plastic, sintered metal, ceramic or metalceramic, is sealed to the holder 2 by a resilient 0-ring 14 and urged outwardly of the holder by a spring 12 compressed between a retaining ring 11 and an end washer 9 held by a lip 8 on the holder. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the sides of the polygon are each concave and the apices are rounded to produce a smooth contour.
