Abstract
886,475. Mixing liquids. ANDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. Oct. 7, 1960 [Oct. 13, 1959], No. 34418/60. Class 86. An apparatus for mixing liquids comprises a tubular casing 1 in which tortuous passages are formed by inserting therein a stack of resilient elements having channels by means of which the liquid is formed into streams which are repeatedly divided and re-formed. The casing has flanges 2, 3 to which are secured end caps 6, 7 between which the elements are compressed.- The end caps have central passageways 11 which are circular at the outer ends and square at the inner edges 21 which bear on the mixing elements. Two rods 14 are received in pockets 13 in the end caps. Each resilient mixing element, Figs. 3, 4 and 5, has two rectangular openings 29, 30, Fig. 3, which converge to central square throats 15, 16 and then diverge to rectangular openings 27, 28, Fig. 5, the longer dimensions of which are at right angles to those of the openings 29, 30. The elements have projecting square beads 19, 20 on their end faces by which they seal against each other and against the end caps of the casing; locating lugs 22, 23 received in recesses 24, 25; and grooves 17, 18 to accommodate the rods 14. Nine elements as shown are assembled into a stack alternately with nine others which are formed as mirror images of them; the elements are externally cylindrical and in the uncompressed state will slide into the casing 1. The stack is of such length that it is compressed when the end caps are drawn up, sealing the elements against each other and against the end caps and expanding them to seal also against the wall of the casing.
