Abstract
887,150. Well packers. OTIS ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1958, No. 38683/58. Class 85. A packer is releasably secured within a landing nipple by a lug which is projected into a recess in the landing nipple by the camming action of a longitudinally movable locking sleeve which slides relatively to the mandrel forming the main body of the packer. The packer 20, shown in Fig. 1 in the lowering position and in Fig.3 in operative position, comprises upper and lower mandrel parts 21, 22 welded together at 23, the part 21 carrying the packing 28 and 29 and being slotted to receive bevel-ended members 31 which, ultimately, are forced outwardly, by the descending expander 34, into a locking groove 57 of a landing nipple 53 which has a flange 55 designed to contact a flange 56 on the packer and stop further descent thereof when the members 31 are opposite the groove 57. The packer 20 and expander 34 are lowered into and removed from the well by a running tool 106 comprising a carrier tube 107 connected to a flexible line running mechanism, the tube 107 carrying dogs 109 which are urged outwardly by springs 111 and sloping faces 107<SP>a</SP>, a skirt 112<SP>a</SP> of a sleeve 112 limiting the outward motion. The sleeve 112 is secured to the tube 107 by a shearpin 113 which is ruptured by downward blows from the running mechanism, leaving the sleeve 112 free to rise on the tube 107, by the action of a strong spring 114, and raise the dogs so that the camming action of the surfaces 117, 118 disengages the dogs from the flange 51 of the expander. When the expander has been fully depressed, the running tool 106 is, therefore, free to be removed from the well. The expander descends in the packer until the bevelled surface 42 rests on the bevel 58 of the packer, spring tongues 43 on the expander being cammed inwards by the bevel 58, ultimately to spring outwardly into a shallow groove 46. The packer receives a tubular sealing nipple 62, having a lower section 63, an upper section 64 carrying packing 74, 75; and a landing head section 65, having a stop shoulder 67, attachable to the string of flow pipe 69. The nipple 62 keeps the spring tongues 43 positively in the groove 46, so that the expander is not raised when the sealing nipple is withdrawn. When the sealing nipple has been removed, the dogs of the tool 106 are re-engaged with the flange 51, the expander is lifted, the spring tongues 43 camming out of the groove 46. When the expander has cleared the members 31, the shoulder 40 on the expander engages the ring 36 and the packer rises, the bevels on the members 31 camming them out of the groove 57. In a modification, Fig. 7, the flange 55 on the landing nipple is dispensed with, and a number of landing nipples are provided with grooves 90 each of a different configuration so that only selector keys 86 of the same configuration will be received thereby. This, enables the depth of the packer position to be chosen. The selector keys 86 are movable radially outwards in a cage 87 by leaf springs 93, and each comprises a lower camming section 96 which forces the keys inwards to pass obstructions on the way down and rests 'ultimately in a groove in the selected nipple, the upper parts of the keys resting in the groove 90 The shoulders 100, 101 prevent further descent of the packer, but when the sealing nipple has been withdrawn and -the spring tongues 84 are released, the camming action of the grooves and keys forces the latter inwardly to allow the packer to be withdrawn. In another modification, the selector keys are pressed into the groove in the selected nipple by leaf springs carried by the running; tool, and are positively locked therein by the expander which is forced down by the running tool between the leaf springs and the selector keys. Spring tongues similar to the tongues 43, engage a groove in the packer and prevent the expander and packer from rising as the running tool is withdrawn. Some of the selector keys may be replaced by locking lugs.
